A Date Downtown

Saturday afternoon, Joe and I went on a "date" downtown. The plan was to have brunch at my favorite restaurant, Cafe Atlantico, then tour a museum or two. I had forgotten all about Rolling Thunder, so it was an interesting trip into the city.

Brunch at Cafe Atlantico was good, but not as wonderful as I remember. I think the highlight of the restaurant is its cocktails, which obviously I didn't get to enjoy.

Pictured here are the cocktails and mocktails we enjoyed with lunch. On the right is the drink I wish I had, Joe's "magic mojito," which, instead of sugar, is made by pouring the drink over freshly-spun cotton candy in the martini glass. On the left is the drink I actually had - frozen lemonade, with an umbrella for good measure.

After brunch, we toured the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery and Museum of American Art. The portraits didn't hold our attention for very long, but the art museum had some really cool stuff. As we were browsing, we realized the new Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum was just a few blocks away so we headed there. It was overpriced and underwhelming, but the wax statues are so realistic they are creepy. Joe did get his picture taken with Richard Nixon, so the experience wasn't a total loss.

We were museumed out at this point, so we found an ice cream shop and a park bench and enjoyed the beautiful weather for a while before heading back home for a nap.
